Christianity

When Elaine borrows Puddy’s car she realizes all of his pre-set radio stations are Christian rock. On the recommendation of George, she changes them, only to find that he changes them back to the original Christian stations.

Puddy tells Elaine that he is religious but does not care that she is not, because he is “not the one going to hell”. This reveals the show’s thoughts on Christians – that they feel even if someone does not believe they are still going to end up in the Christian hell.

Puddy tells Elaine to steal her neighbour’s newspaper when she does not get one. He cannot do it because of the Ten Commandments, but she is going to hell anyway therefore her soul can be sacrificed. Elaine tells Puddy that she cannot take it, that it belongs to someone else – that it is stealing. Showing that although Elaine is religious, she has better values than Puddy who is religious. Suggesting that just because you believe in a religion does not make you better than someone who does not.

All of this concerns Elaine so her and Puddy seek the advice of a priest. They ask him about his thoughts on their relationship since she is not religious but he is.

He tells them that they will both go to hell for having premarital sex. This pleases Elaine, since they are both going to hell now (even though she does not even have belief in it), but upsets Puddy – but not to the point of ending the relationship, suggesting that some sins are okay but others are not. Also suggesting that not even religious people take all aspects of religion seriously.
